They are here to help. Dating A Crate Vintage Club Amplifier You date Crate amps the same way you date Ampeg amps (SLM period only) which were owned by St. Louis Music and manufactured in St. Driver ps usb k one ktv. Louis from 1985 to 2005. They are essentially the same amps.
1985-2005 - These are the amps during the St. Louis Music (Crate Amps) period. A new serialization system was developed and it became a code used for many years. This is the best way to identify the date of manufacture during this period.

A 10 digit number is used as a serial number, which contains lots of information. The number is set up like this: LLLCYMNNNN. LLL stands for the model, C stands for the country. (U is U.K., Y is Europe, W is Worldwide, and D stands for domestic or U.S.). The Y is a year code that is a letter, starting with A as 1988, (see chart below).
What happened before 1987 for the year is unclear as very few amps were made because of bankruptcy for MTI. The M is a number code for January-October. (Jan is 1, Feb is 2, Oct is 10, fill in the blanks.) For November and December the letters A and B were used respectively. The last 4 numbers (N) are the actual serial number for the instrument. A= 1988 G= 1994 M= 2000 B= 1989 H= 1995 N= 2001 C= 1990 I= 1996 O= 2002 D= 1991 J= 1997 P= 2003 E= 1992 K= 1998 Q= 2004 F= 1993 L= 1999 R= 2005.

I used it for a short time when I was running two amps in small venues. Good information, though I don't think I'll ever need it. I bought a Crate GT80 brand new in the 80's, don't care the exact year. Bought it so I wouldn't have to lug pedals around for effects and gigged with it for a few. When it started failing after a couple years, I pulled the two Telefunken tubes out of it, left it on the street with a bunch of other stuff on Friday for garbage pickup day, come Monday it was the only thing still sitting there when the actual paid sanitation engineers came by to remove it. The title was perfectly suitable for the subject matter and allowed for a little joking around.

It sounds decent for a low wattage EL84 powered Class A amp. I should have bought the damn amp. There are two flaws with mine. First there is a rattle which is very commonly spoken of on the net. I put silicone caulk on the mounting screws and that worked for a while. For some reason the tone pot is very strange. It provides some treble in the center of its range but adds bass at either extreme. Those issues aside, with a better speaker it would be a great little amp.
Especially if you like EL84s. Definitely not bad for the $125 I paid used.

I have a VC212e cabinet that I got in a trade that I really kinda like. It's in the pole barn where my band rehearses right now, so I'm not sure if it has any identifiable stuff like serial numbers, but I always wondered how old it was. Do you know if there's any information on dating the cabs too?and yes. I left that phrase open for anyone who feels like making fun of me for dating cabs. BRING ON THE SMART-A$$ COMMENTS PLEASE!! (Seriously though, I would be curious to know how old this thing is!).
