This is the printer you need at home i should state upfront that the reason i bought this printer is because i already owned one. My nephew needed a printer and i have a love/hate (mostly hate) thing going with this printer.

It does have four cartridges, which i consider superior to multiple colors in one tiny cartridge. And i believe a home printer should cost less than $50. So the answer for me is to buy a $15-$35 printer on ebay, a full set of compatible cartridges, and compatible ink. The reason i say 'compatible' cartridges is because the epson cartridge holds about much ink as a loogie, maybe less.
And yes, the cartridge recognition 'feature' can be defeated. Most of the instructions are written by an esol person, so google deep enough to understand the issue.

I had an Epson Stylus 15 years ago and loved it but when I traded it out for something newer, I bought a Lexmark/Kodak printer and it was good, but started leaking ink, went to a Brother, than another Lexmark (biggest piece of junk I've ever owned) and now back to the Epson. I figured I'd give Epson another shot because I liked that first one so well and at around $100, the price wasn't bad for the features it offered. If there is anything I don't like is that when it first starts to print it is a bit louder than other printers I've had, but overall this thing is superior in every way. I've had it about a month and have printed numerous documents and probably 12-18 pages of photos and the ink is still half full. I would highly recommend this printer to any one, provided you can get past the initial noise when it starts to print a page. Ink hog, if you use Epson ink.
Really nice (and fast) printing for both text and pictures. Ink gets quite expensive if you use Epson Inks. For 3-4 years now I have been using replacment cartridges from 'InkFactory.com', that 'auto-reset' when they reach about 10% - 20% full. I get much much better 'milage' from my ink because it uses 'all' the ink in the cartridge.
You just have to monitor your printouts because when a cartridge runs out of ink it will only be noticeable in the printed page. That's when you replace the cartridge. A very small inconvience vs. The cost savings in Ink.
